Indonesian Newspaper Project |
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 |
The successful development of research in contemporary Indonesian history relies heavily on the accessibility of source materials which detail the changes in the social environment and local communities under Dutch and Japanese rule. One of these sources are Indonesian newspapers issued during the Dutch and Japanese administration in Indonesia. The Netherlands Institute for War Documentation holds a unique collection of Indonesian newspapers issued during the Japanese military administration in Indonesia, such as the Asia Raya, the Matahari Ambon and the Soeara Asia, to mention just a few. Also other institutes in the Netherlands, as the Royal Institute for Linquistics and Anthropology (KITLV) in Leiden, the Royal Institute for the Tropics (KIT) in Amsterdam, the Royal Library (KB) in The Hague and the International Institute for Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam hold important collections of local and regional Indonesian newspapers published in the period 1930-1950. This collection newspapers, although not complete, forms a very important source for scholars interested in contemporary Asian history. The aim of this project is to microfilm and digitise all Indonesian newspapers from the period 1940-1946 derived firstly from the NIOD collection, and secondly from the other institutes in the Netherlands with similar collections of Indonesian newspapers and make these online accessible for scholars and students specialized in Asian history. To help the researchers find their desired information easily, the database is made accessible by full text retrieval but also by keywords added to each newspaper. The project started in July 2004 and will be completed in November 2006. At the moment we are looking for means to continue the project for the period 1946 -1950. Close cooperation with partner-institutes is required to do this effectively. Ideally speaking our efforts would lead to a digitally consultable database nation wide or even world wide, where all or most of the newspapers and periodicals in the Indonesian language can be found.
